What is Conjunctivitis?

Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, characterized by a pink/red eye.
There are 3 TYPES of CONJUNCTIVITIS (Pink eye): Viral, Bacterial and Chemical.
Each type of Conjunctivitis has various symptoms and in turn, requires various different treatments.

VIRAL PINK EYE
Symptoms are usually associated with more of a clear water discharge. Often, viral 'cold-like' symptoms, such as sinus congestions and a runny nose, are also present. The eyelids may also be slightly swollen. While viral pink eye does not require antibiotics, those affected should see a doctor.

The use of normal eye-drops (such as Visine) will help to relieve discomfort. Viral pink eye is contagious and usually resolves 7-10 days after symptoms appear.

BACTERIAL PINK EYE
Symptoms include eye pain, swelling, redness and a moderate to large amount of discharge (usually yellow or greenish in colour), which usually accumulates after sleeping.

Treatment requires Doctors prescription for topical antibiotics

CHEMICAL PINK EYE
Symptoms are red bloodshot eyes that feels dry and gritty. Although difficult to differentiate between VIRAL PINK EYE- CHEMICAL PINK EYE can be confirmed by a 'bruised or tender' sensation when the eyeball is pressed. Sometimes swollen or puffy eyelids occur.

Chemical pink eye is caused bu chemical substances/vapors that burn the Membranes of the eye.

Eyelash Extensions adhesives fumes and vapors can cause Chemical Pink Eye. This can occur if clients eyelids are not fully closed due to (drifting off to sleep) during the treatment. Your muscles in your eyelid relaxes and may slightly open which leaves the eyeball exposed. As the eyelash stylist I will frequently remind to keep your eyelids relaxingly closed.

If These clients have this condition I advise to use normal eye-drops (such as Visine) to alleviate any discomfort and should see an improvement within 3-4 days.
